< Abstract >

When preparing cosmetic creams, combining higher alcohol and some surfactants is known to form α-gels, which are widely used as a stabilizing agent or a property modifier for O/W emulsion preparations. The α-gel has a structure similar to lamellar liquid crystals and exhibits a barrier function similar to that of the skin’s intercellular lipids. Studying the phase behavior of the simplex system (quaternary system), we discovered a homogenous solution (I-b phase) at a high-temperature region. This I-b phase, after cooling, became a transparent homogenous gel without excess higher alcohol. In addition, this gel also shows an excellent moisture-retaining property, and potential application in high-performance skincare products will be considered.
